A few months into the pandemic, like so many of you, I found myself bored out of my mind wondering if our world would ever get back to normal.
As a former network news correspondent, it was tough watching everything around me shut down. A sense of community was lost as the masses retreated into isolation. The pandemic’s collateral damage was becoming more evident as people stopped working, kids went to school via Zoom, businesses shuttered and communication became scant.
I was used to have a voice because I had always worked with a microphone in-hand. Now what?
I approached one of the few people I knew I could really rely on – my 83 year-old Holocaust survivor mom, who also happens to be a licensed therapist – and asked her if she would host a podcast with her only son, me. Luckily, she was losing her mind, too, and said yes without hesitation. That’s how our podcast, aptly titled Surviving The Survivor was born.
Nearly two years and 85 episodes into Surviving the Survivor, we’ve now built a devoted following with roughly 50,000 downloads a month on various platforms, averaging a little more than 10,000 views per episode. We have interviewed an eclectic mix of guests from Carole Baskin of Tiger King fame to Harvard astrophysicist Dr. Avi Loeb (who is convinced he spotted an alien spacecraft) to Marc Polymeropoulos, a former top-level CIA officer who lived in the shadows for nearly three decades.
While Surviving The Survivor is a true labor of love, it has also paid dividends in business. Providing funny, irreverent and informative information allowed us to create an engaging platform, which in turn, has led to substantive leads for Content Partners Media. While we didn’t develop the podcast as some sort of business marketing strategy, that’s what it morphed into organically. It’s unknowingly helped us with lead generation, customer acquisition and brand awareness.
My Uncle Alan, may he rest in peace, was a leather salesman back in the day. He’d knock on doors all day long, hoping to buy his leather low and sell it high. Podcasting, in many ways, is the modern-day equivalent of knocking on all those many doors. But, thankfully, we can now meet all those potentially important clients from the confines of our comfy studio.
As we’ve been saying for a long time at Content Partners Media, content is currency. And, podcasting is a fun, smart way for any company that wants to create its own high-quality content in a more personalized manner which will almost certainly pay itself back thru the business connections that will be created as a result.
Podcasting provides a great tool for you to start building an audience around your message, while building relationships, attracting new clients and growing your following by creating content that your network will find valuable. What are you waiting for?!
